HISTORY OF PEZINOK CASTLE

Originally a water castle with double walls and moats, it was in its early days of the 13th century the seat of the nobles from Svätý Jur and Pezinok. For almost eight hundred years it served as a symbol of wealth and power. The first written mention of the defensive castle is from 1271. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the local counts defended the king against the Turks and Hussites. They ruled for three hundred years until they died out by the sword... Then the owners, supporters and detractors of the kings, took turns here, and it was also owned by the rulers themselves. It was not until the Pálffy family rebuilt the castle in Pezinok into a castle. And the last of them, Ján, left unique collections in the castle. After his death, more than 110 years ago, they were to become the basis of the Pezinok Castle museums... The collapse of Austria-Hungary and the establishment of Czechoslovakia, as well as two world wars, brought bad times. In 1930, the Pálffys sold the castle to the city. At that time, it was already in a devastated state. Since 1936, the Slovak Wine Cooperative has operated here, later the state-owned Wine Works. The legacy of the last Pálffy is being fulfilled by Štefan, the first of the owners of the castle from the Šimák family. A philanthropist who not only improved the castle, but also made his own collections of art glass.

CASTLE WINERY

Our Château Winery is located right under the château, which shelters 800-year-old cellars with apostolic wine barrels, a storage cellar with hundreds of barrels, but also a Museum of Viticulture. In Château Pezinok we process the harvest with the latest technology. We are the only ones in the country who have a frugal vibrating wine-hopper. We use modern rotating vinifiers, sludge removers, filters and computer managed anti-corrosive tanks, able to maintain the correct temperature, which the winemaker requires. The whole process is finalized in our own bottle filler. Modern technology is however just an assistant, doing whatever our specialists allow and require. Our wine is an honest product, with fresh color and a tasteful smell. In taste it is exemplarily clear, without any disturbing elements.
